The people of Decatur took food baskets to the Fair Ground Hospital and the Empire Hospital. The baskets were filled with biscuits, rusk, broiled and friend chicken, ground coffee and blackberry wine. Also, the good citizens dispatched pails of fresh water to bathe the faces, hands and arms of the soldiers. Additionally, volunteers comforted the soldiers has they lay painfully in their beds.
