Why People Migrated

The children and grandchildren of the first colonists began immigrating into other States because of new opportunities for land, and because their crops had worn out the home plantation.  Land Grants were offered to Revolutionary War Soldiers for their service and in Georgia the counties of Washington, Elbert, Wilkes, Franklin and Burke were widely settled. Of course, the researcher has to consider the fact that these large counties were later sub-divided and that this is the place to search also. In Georgia, people drew in land lotteries beginning in 1805, which went to 1820, 1821, 1827 and 1830. The very popular Cherokee Land Lottery of 1830 was so named because the Indian lands were being distributed.
