The Last Will and Testament of Button Gwinnett

The first will recorded in Chatham County was that of  Button Gwinnett who died in the year of 1777 due to wounds received in a duel with General Lachlan McIntosh.  The men had political differences. The dual occurred in the streets of Savannah in March. Gwinnett fired his pistol and missed. McIntosh fired and hit Gwinnett in the leg. Gwinnett was taken home immediately but died two or three days later. As a result the General, who had achieved fame during the Revolutioonary War, was sent to the Northern Campaign (in Canada).  All of the Chatham County Records survived and are available in digital form at Index to Georgia County Records
