James Ellis. Atlanta boy Fights in Battle of Manilla, 1899

Sergeant James T. Ellis of company A, 29th US Volunteer Infantry enlisted in Atlanta on July 25, 1899 and arrived in Manila on November 4th of the same year. His company immediately became active against the insurgents in the Phillipines.

His first battle occurred in Montalban, Luzon, on December 27, 1899. He was again engaged near Boac, Marinduque on July 21, 1900 and was a member of the expedition to Boao from April 20th to April 25th, 1900. He was also of the party that withstood night attacks at Catbalogan, Samar from February 22 to February 28, 1901. His regiment left Samar on March 10, 1901 to return to San Francisco. Sgt. Ellis was one of the unsung heroes of the Americans in the Phillipines and received a wound in his shoulder.
