Unpublished Pension Information

Pension claims of surviving soldiers and widows
There is a considerable amount of unpublished data regarding pensions at local court houses. This information is usually found in the Record Room (wills, deeds, marriages, etc.) and are in very large books.  Each county keeps a record of disbursements to recipients of civil war pensions, mexican war, etc. which includes monies paid to widows and orphans.  It is chronicled by the year the pension was established and ends upon the last payment.  This is when the date of death is noted.  The dates of payments are worthy of noting because it iinforms you that the ancestor was a resident of the county for specified periods of times, and sometimes mentions other relatives.  It is set up like a large chart. Every genealogist needs to search through these books.  The Confederate Dead Database by Jeannette Holland Austin is available to members of Georgia Pioneers and provides names of over 35,000 soldiers, where they died or were buried, units, dates, etc.
