One Place your Ancestor cannot Hide

Finding lost relatives can be a pain.  Sometimes I think that some of them l\had a very private life and avoided strangers like the census-taker, did not file their deeds or other documents at the court house, and did not leave a last will and testament.  However, there is one place which they could not avoid! And that is the tax accessor. Every county has a tax digest which maintains a record of everyone who owe tax on even the smallest parccel of land.  The digest provides a vague idea of where the land was located, near what river, etc., and lists the number of acres of pine trees, vacant land, etc.  Failure to pay the tax results in a section called "Defaulters", usually at the end of each district's enumeration.  Nothing is alphabetized, but once you find your ancestor and note the district where he resided, you can thumb through the rest of the book.  The default area means that he did not pay his taxes.  Did he move away?  These notations are clues for the researcher.
