Clarke County Court House Records are being added to www.georgiapioneers.com

Broad Street in Athens
The Clarke County court house records is a major county to research in Georgia for genealogists. The reason is the 1785 charter by the University of Georgia on this site. In those days it was known as Franklin College, in honor of Rev. William Franklin, a minister from Warren County who also helped to build the first church in Wilkes County. A thorough search of the deeds of Wilkes and Warren Counties will help to prove that Rev.William Franklin was the instrument behind the Franklin College, not Benjamin Franklin.  A proper education was foremost to the Georgia frontier, and many sons attended the local field schools as well as universities.  Planters also sent their sons abroad to Oxford and similar English Universities.  The idea that Georgians went uneducation is simply not true.  Some references are the 1895 edition of the Memoirs of Georgia and the Encyclopedia of Georgia, etc.  From Georgia's earliest crop of poor settlers came such men as John Milledge who arose in the ranks and became Governor of Georgia.  It was milledge who purchased 633 acres of land from Daniel Easley to be donated to the university.  Some Easley wills and estates are found on and available to members of Georgia Pioneers

Old Clarke County Wills and estates are currently being added to Georgia Pioneers to assist the genealogist discover more information.
